Details about Fairford

Fairford is a tiny town situated in Gloucestershire in south west England. It is an integral part of the Cotswold region and it lies on the banks of the river Coln. The exact location of Fairford will put it at approximately 10 km from Cirencester in the east direction, 6 km to the west of Lechlade and some 15km to the north of Swindon. Attractions near the small town include the RAF Fairford and the Cotswold water park. The population of the town is about 3,200 and the people are extremely hospitable and well groomed.

Fairford is very well known for the large ST. Mary’s Church and is also the proud owner of the most original medieval stain glass paintings and stone carvings. The churches in Fairford are many including the Roman Catholic Church of the 19th century, Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury to name a few. The churches have been preserved very well and thus are still resplendent in their beauty and awe inspiring architecture.

It was in 1135 when Henry I gave permission for a market to be set up every Tuesday and Friday.  The market had become a monthly affair since the 19th century and a corn and cattle market is still set up each week.

The famous Fairford Hospital is an advanced centre for medical aid and treats thousands of people for all kinds of problems. The land on which the hospital stands was donated to Fairford by the then Lord of the Manor, Richard Barker, and then the residents of the town went about collecting funds to build the hospital.

The RAF Fairford hosts the world’s biggest military air show the Royal International Air Tattoo which is attended by people from all over the world.
