Cheltenham is a large borough situated in Gloucestershire, England. It is known for being a spa town, with its mineral waters supposedly having healing properties and this is one of its most famous attractions also has the distinguished flagship race of the annual British steeplechase horse racing and it is considered to be a major attraction to the city, next to its Regency heritage.
The borough is situated at the edge of the Cotswolds and offers an image of respect and wealth. Since 1716, thanks to the discovery of naturally occurring mineral spas, the city has become known as a Spa Town, a phrase derived from the town Spa in Belgian and means it is frequented mainly for health benefits, to "take the waters". The Cheltonians, as they refer to themselves, believe strongly in health and education, “Health and Education” is actually the motto of this town and prides itself on its education facilities, including the world famous Cheltenham Ladies College.
also known to be a flood prone area largely due to the River Chelt, which flows through it. This river over-flowed in mid-2007 due to unseasonable high levels of rainfall in a short period of time.
In 1974, the borough was merged with the Charlton Kings the borough of Gloucestershire, and later another four parishes would also be added from the borough of Tewkesbury.
There are many annual festivals in Cheltenham that range from jazz and folk music to literary as well as science festivities. The majority of these annual events take place in the Town Hall as well as the Everyman Theatre, Pittville Pump Room and the Playhouse Theatre, and is certainly known for its horse racing, as it is home to the flagship race of the British Steeplechase racing circuit, the National Hunt as well as jump racing. The town boasts the distinguished British Gold Cup, an annual festival which falls during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
Cheltenham is home to one of the biggest outdoor pools in the whole of England covering an area of over 50 square meters, not including the children’s’ pool. The borough is a popular shopping attraction and offers a variety of top notch shopping facilities within its jurisdiction.
There are a number of ways to reach Cheltenham including main roads and motorways and the city also sports a series of train routes, in which visitors can easily access from almost any point in England to its railway station. This borough also offers its own rail lines, the Cheltenham Flyer.
Thanks to the discovery of the mineral spas back in the 1700’s this borough has and will continue to grow in popularity as a centralised point in the country for rest and relaxation.
